If you’re wondering if it’s possible to find a job during coronavirus, the answer is yes. Even though many companies have implemented indefinite hiring freezes, other companies are still actively hiring and looking for candidates like you. This means you still have a shot at finding a new job despite the pandemic.
If you’re looking for a few tips on how to continue your job search during this time, you’re in the right place. This article contains tips on how to find companies that are hiring and what to prepare for as you continue your job search amidst coronavirus.
1. Find (and apply to) companies that are hiring
If you need a job as soon as possible, it won’t do you much good (at least not right now) to submit your resume to companies that aren’t hiring during coronavirus. So how can you tell which companies are hiring and which companies aren’t? Fortunately, many job boards and websites allow you to see when jobs are posted. Knowing when jobs are posted is helpful because the companies that are still posting jobs while coronavirus persists are likely the same companies that are continuing to hire despite the virus.
How to find recent job postings on LinkedIn
To find companies that have recently posted jobs to LinkedIn, navigate to the “Jobs” page where you will be prompted to enter in your desired job and location. Once you enter in that information, click the blue “Search” button to take you to the next page.
From here, LinkedIn will show you a list of jobs that meet your desired search criteria. There will also be a drop down toward the top of the page called “Date Posted”. Once clicked, this drop down will display the number of job openings that were posted in the “Past 24 hours” or “Past Week”, etc. To see jobs posted in the “Past 24 hours” or the “Past Week”, click the corresponding radio button to filter for only those jobs, and then click the blue “Apply” button.
This will show you which companies have posted jobs recently on LinkedIn.
How to find recent job postings on Indeed.com
Navigate to https://indeed.com/ and enter in the kind of job you are looking for, and where you’d like that job to be. Then, click the blue “Find Jobs” button.
Now, Indeed.com will show you a list of jobs that meet your desired search criteria. Next, click the “Advanced Job Search” button to the right of the blue “Find Jobs” button.
Scroll to the bottom of the page, and you will see a drop down called “Age – Jobs published”. This drop down will allow you to filter for jobs posted “since yesterday” or “within 3 days”, etc. Use this drop down to find jobs posted recently.
Using this tactic to find recent job postings won’t guarantee that you’ll find companies that are still hiring, but it can help. The next time you are searching for a job online, be sure to look for these types of filters on job boards and websites to try to find and apply to the companies that are still actively hiring despite coronavirus.
2. Lean on your online networks
In a time where we are practicing social distancing, utilizing your online networks (like LinkedIn or Facebook) can be very valuable during your job search. According to an article by Glassdoor on how to search for jobs during a pandemic, you should “tap into your networks that might include friends, professional mentors, and old colleagues to see if they know anyone hiring or organizations with open roles.” While doing research on your own to find new jobs is beneficial, connecting with people in your online networks will help you cast an even wider net on your search for current job openings.
By reaching out to people in your online networks and letting them know that you are available and actively looking for your next job, you will leverage your online networks to greatly improve your chances of finding a job during this outbreak. Pro-tip: If you don’t have a LinkedIn page, now is the time to create one!
3. Start practicing for phone and video interviews
Now that most of us are working from home, interviews are being held via phone and video as opposed to in-person. According to an article by Forbes, you should expect a typical interview process during the pandemic to “be through email, then by phone, and as you progress, by video”. If you haven’t done a phone or video interview in a while, a little practice and preparation can go a long way. To practice for a phone interview, try enlisting a friend to ask you practice interview questions that you may experience in a real phone interview. And if you need help navigating video interviews, we’ve got you covered. Check out our blog post “Tips for Nailing a Video Interview” to prepare for your next virtual interview. By practicing well in advance for both phone and video interviews, you will increase your chances of having a great interview, and ultimately increase your chances of landing a job during coronavirus.
